Types of Glassware Goblets
A goblet is a drinking vessel with a flat base, stem and bowl in which the beverage is held. While this sounds straightforward enough, it is actually a bit more complicated. There are a variety of different glassware goblets for different types of beverages. Nowhere is this more evident than in the world of wine. There are a variety of different types of wine glasses, especially crafted to bring out the subtle nuances in the wine being tasted. If you enjoy wine or want to learn more about it, a crash course in the glassware used is in order.
For red wine there are two distinct types of goblets. The Bordeaux glass is tall with a broad drinking bowl, made for strong, full-bodied reds such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Bordeaux glasses direct the flow of wine to the back of the palate so the flavors of the wine will be best appreciated. Burgundy glasses are even wider than the Bordeaux glasses and made to enjoy softer red wines such as Pinot Noir. When sipping from a Bordeaux glass the wine is directed to the tip of the tongue for optimum flavor.
Glassware made for white wine has narrower bowls in order to keep the wine cooler. The smaller bowl prevents air and heat from circulating through the white wine to help it maintain desirable drinking temperature. White wine glasses are not as narrow as champagne flutes but they are more narrow than either type of red wine goblet. Champagne flutes have thin, tall bowls to preserve the bubbles and the temperature of this sparkling alcoholic beverage. While there are no rules set in stone when it comes to the type of goblet you should drink out of using the proper goblet can enhance your tasting experience.
There are other types of glassware goblets, such as those with short stems and large bowls made for water and non-alcoholic beverages. Some goblets are perfect for serving holiday punch and even certain types of desserts like ice cream floats, pudding or mousse. You can purchase all the different types of goblets anywhere housewares are sold. Discount department stores like Target and Wal-Mart, along with more upscale department stores like J.C. Penney and Macy's sell a wide variety of glassware for every occasion.
| Will unglazed clay goblets improve 'economical' red wines? It has been suggested that I purchase unglazed clay goblets to "smooth out" the taste of some more economical reds. What is your opinion? Ah, the old pottery-class trick. What youve been told is not entirely bizarre, but I cant recommend the practice. ... | ||
