Choosing the Right Goblet Wine Glass

The word goblet is used to describe any drinking vessel with a stem, base and body. This can encompass many different styles of glass. For example, when choosing a goblet wine glass there are a variety of things to consider. Each wine has its own special type of goblet from which it should be consumed. Glass wine goblets are designed to bring out the unique flavors and aromas of the wine. Let's start by taking a look at the ever popular red wine glasses. Red wines include Merlot, Cabernet, Bordeaux, Shiraz and Pinot Noir to name several.

Red wine glasses come in two varieties -- Bordeaux and Burgundy. Bordeaux glasses are tall and wide, made to bring out the best in robust reds like Merlot. More subtle red wines like Pinot Noir are made for Burgundy glasses, which are a bit larger in the bowl area than Bordeaux glasses. This allows the wine to reach the tip of the tongue where its flavor is best experienced. While red wine glasses have fairly wide bowls, white wine glasses are just the opposite.

White wine glasses are more narrow in the bowl area and taller on average than red wine glasses. This is so the white wine will stay cool rather than being warmed by too much air exposure. Champagne flutes are the tallest and narrowest of all goblets because this shape lends itself perfectly to the temperature and carbonation of champagne and/or sparkling wine. Any wine expert can tell you that the shape and the size of the glass has a real effect on the flavor and aroma of the wine being consumed and this is also true for champagne.

As compared with the traditional water goblet, the goblet wine glass is made for a purpose. Water goblets are usually quite large in the body and short in the stem, and may have larger bases. They are perfect for water, sangria, punch and even various desserts. They are certainly more multipurpose than the Bordeaux glass or champagne flute. If you want a good variety of goblets without spending too much, consider a set of water goblets, a set of red wine goblets, a set of white wine goblets and a set of champagne flutes.
