Are Lead Crystal Goblets Safe to Use?
In recent years the safety of lead has come into question. Once commonly used by those affluent enough to afford them, lead crystal goblets are not as popular as they once were. The FDA issued a warning back in the early 1990s regarding the use of lead crystal for storing or drinking beverages because it is possible lead can leach into the beverage being consumed. This is especially the case with alcoholic spirits like wine, liquor and beer. Children should never be served from lead crystal drinking vessels.
Lead crystal is fine glass to which lead has been added. Lead is added to enhance the glass, making it easier to cut and more beautiful to behold. However these enhancements come at a price because lead has been proven to be a hazardous material to humans that can damage vital parts of the body like the nervous system, bone marrow and kidneys. Many people do own lead crystal pieces like decanters, goblets and tumblers. These items are often treasured heirlooms used during special occasions.
You don't necessarily have to stop drinking out of your lead crystal stemware forever if you have expensive pieces you treasure. However, you should strictly limit use to special occasions only and test all your crystal with a lead alert kit before use. These kits will tell you whether your crystal is safe or hazardous to use. Liquids should never be stored in lead crystal containers for periods longer than several hours because the longer the liquid is kept in the crystal the higher the potential for lead contamination. When shopping for crystal the easiest way to avoid this issue is to buy fine glass that does not have lead added.
A crystal goblet is a beautiful piece of stemware from which to drink your beverage of choice. Lead crystal goblets are certainly beautiful, but not worth the health risk if you can avoid using them. There are so many different alternatives to lead crystal. You can purchase fine glass made for water, wine or even champagne from a variety of different glassware manufacturers. Crystal water goblets make gorgeous gifts and are a lovely indulgence for your own home. A set of beautiful glass stemware is a wonderful way to celebrate a housewarming, wedding, anniversary or other special event.
